Wages or per-job pay, how long a contract runs, any registration or tickets you hold and a move into supervising can all shape your plans. We’ll help you plan around each of them, from trainee to your own crew.

What we advise on
Away from field work through illness or injury: how would the bills get paid?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, subject to its terms, exclusions and the insurer’s assessment.
Together, we’ll weigh up life, TPD and income protection from the insurers willing to consider your work.
Income protection can pay a share of your pre-tax income if you can’t work, usually based on earnings in the 12 months before, and Moneysmart says most policies offer a waiting period between 14 days and two years. An insurer usually looks at your job and duties when you apply, and this can affect whether cover is offered, the benefit periods available and the amount. Exclusions can apply, including to occupations or activities, and the insurer decides on any application.
Together, we’ll work through:

If your pay moves from job to job, what would you like a steadier budget to make room for?
Starting from income you can rely on can make it easier to plan savings, repayments and goals of your own.
Together, we’ll bring your jobs, invoices and any wages into one budget, based on what you can rely on.
Field work pay can come as wages, allowances or a rate per job, and what comes in can change from week to week. Under one award, for example, a stand-by allowance and a tool allowance can apply. So we start with the income you can rely on, then plan anything above it.
Together, we’ll work through:
Who’s paying into your super right now, and what could you add for later?
Seeing what’s paid in, and what’s yours to add, can help you plan contributions around your budget.
We can trace who pays your super with you, on wages, per job or in your own firm.
On a contract, a business may still have to pay super if you’re paid mainly for your labour. The ATO looks at three things together: more than half the contract’s value for your labour, no set result and no delegating. An ABN doesn’t settle it, and a contract with your own company, trust or partnership is different, as the hirer doesn’t have to pay. An accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand.
Together, we’ll work through:
If your money arrives job by job, which decisions are worth planning with tax in mind?
Setting tax aside from each payment and timing bigger purchases with an accountant can leave fewer surprises.
We can work through the tax side of your telco work with you, alongside an accountant.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. Part of each payment may end up owed as tax, so an accountant can estimate the amount to set aside. What you can claim for a van, phone, test gear and ticket costs is also a question for an accountant.
Together, we’ll work through:
A first subcontract, your first tower ticket or an offer to supervise: what would you like to plan next?
Looking at a step before you take it can show its cost, its pay and what changes at home.
We’ll map your next move in telco work with you and set it out in a financial plan, or Statement of Advice.
Telco field work can change over a career: trainee to registered cabler, wages to an ABN, premises work to towers, or a move into supervising and planning. The same work can come with different pay, super and cover depending on who you work for. ACMA says that if you’re not registered, you can perform cabling work only if directly supervised by a registered cabler at all times. A registrar answers registration questions, and we plan the money side.
Together, we’ll work through:
When you picture stepping back from field work, what would you like those years to look like?
An early start can give you more choice about when you finish and how you spend that time.
Together, we’ll plan retirement from your super and savings first, with any firm or gear value as an addition.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. We’d start with super and savings, because what a small firm or its gear could sell for isn’t certain.
Together, we’ll work through:
Does a home or investment property fit your plans, if your income moves from job to job?
Testing repayments against a slow stretch can show what a purchase might ask of your budget.
We’ll test a purchase with you against a slow stretch of jobs, and a broker arranges any loan.
Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. A lender decides how it reads per-job and ABN income, and a broker compares lenders and arranges any loan. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:

Families, businesses and towns rely on what you do long after you’ve driven off to the next job. We’d begin by listening: how your weeks run, who matters to you and what you’d like more of. From there, we can help you build a plan around how you’re paid and the life you want.
What you earn can go towards more than the next bill. It might be a home, time away with people you love, a small firm of your own, or the choice to slow down one day. The plan can also allow for anyone who relies on your income. Wherever you’re heading, we can work through it with you, and if you’d like ongoing advice, we can review your plan with you each year.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
They may, and an ABN doesn’t settle it. The ATO treats a contractor as an employee for super if more than half the contract’s value is for their labour, they’re not paid to achieve a set result and they can’t delegate the work. A contract with your own company, trust or partnership means the hirer doesn’t have to pay.
A van, test gear or materials in your price can change the sum, as payments for those aren’t labour. Per-job pay doesn’t answer the question by itself, and an accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand. We can plan your super with you around what’s paid in and what you’d like to add.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It can depend on your employer’s main business, your duties and any agreement, rather than your job title. One award covers businesses such as telecommunications carriers and labour hire for that industry, and leaves out a business whose main function is installing or maintaining telecommunications equipment and lines, unless it also operates them. A separate award covers electrical, electronics and communications contractors and their employees in its classifications.
Two people doing similar work can be on different awards. Where your job falls, including any rigging work, is a question for Fair Work, where the national award system applies. We can plan with you from the pay you receive.
Start from what a full year of records shows, rather than your strongest or weakest week. Invoices and payslips can show a level of income you can rely on most of the time, and your bills and repayments can be set against that.
From there, a share of each payment can go to tax, with an accountant estimating the amount, and to a buffer for slower stretches. Anything above that can go towards goals of your own. We can work this out with you from your own figures.
It helps to look at this before anything changes. Points to plan:
Income protection is generally for illness or injury rather than losing a job, so this is planned through your savings and budget. We can go over the numbers with you from your own invoices or payslips.
That’s your decision, and we can set the two side by side with you. Points to compare:
Fair Work says having an ABN or issuing invoices doesn’t automatically make someone a contractor, and a lawyer can confirm how that applies to you. An accountant can work through the tax, and we can plan the money side with you.
Public liability, tools and van cover sit with a general insurance broker, who can explain each policy and whether it pays anything if you’re the one hurt.
Our part is personal: what you’d want coming in if you couldn’t work, what you’d want left behind, and how super and savings fit in. Cover options come from the insurers willing to consider your work, and the insurer decides on any application.
Start with how your pay would change. A move can replace per-job income or overtime with a different rate, so it’s worth setting the two side by side. Points to plan:
We can cost the move with you before you accept.
Yes. We’d start with how long you’d like to stay in the field, whether that’s climbing, pits or premises work, and whether supervising, auditing or training comes before you stop. If you’re self-employed, your super may be yours to plan unless a business has to pay it.
The plan starts with super and savings, with any van, gear or small firm as an addition, as a sale isn’t certain. You can read more about our retirement advice.
