Work at height and the cover that goes with it, any busy months after storms and the super in your trade all connect. We’ll help you plan for each of them, from apprentice to crew owner.

What we advise on
What happens to your pay if illness or injury means weeks or months away from work?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, so household bills and your savings goals can keep going.
We can compare life insurance and income protection for roofers across several insurers, starting with the duties you do on roofs.
When you apply, insurers usually ask about your age and job, so the roofing duties you describe are part of the assessment and offers can differ between insurers. An application can be offered on standard terms, with a premium loading, with an exclusion for a named condition, deferred for a period, or declined. The insurer decides.
Together, we’ll work through:
When work comes in a rush, what could the extra help you build for the quieter months?
Planning the busy months ahead of time can turn a rush of work into a buffer, savings and goals of your own.
Together, we’ll plan a budget for work that can bunch up after storms and ease off in quieter months.
The Bureau of Meteorology says most severe thunderstorms happen between September and March, which is a pattern rather than a forecast of how much work will come. If you take on storm repairs, the busier months can follow the weather, with call-outs and travel arriving close together. A buffer from those months can carry fixed costs through the quieter ones.
Together, we’ll work through:
Where could your super take you if some of a busy season went into it?
Topping up super in strong months can add up over a working life and give you more choice later on.
We can check with you what cover sits in each super account before anything is merged, closed or left without contributions.
Default cover inside super can usually be issued without medical checks, though it may carry pre-existing condition rules set out in the fund’s PDS, and increasing it is usually underwritten like any other application. Cover you apply for outside super usually comes with questions about your age and job.
Together, we’ll work through:
Which goals would you most like your roofing income to move forward over the next few years?
Clear goals and a plan built around the trade you’re in can help each year of work count towards them.
We’ll set out a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, around the roofing trade you’re in and the stage you’ve reached.
Roof tilers and slaters are listed in the on-site building award, while the plumbing award counts roof plumbing as plumbing, and roof plumbing requires registration or licensing. Pay rates, licensing and the path through the trade can differ between the two. A new licence, a first worker or a change in duties are natural points to review the plan.
Together, we’ll work through:
Is buying a home part of your plans, on work that can come in bursts?
Saving through busy stretches, with repayments tested on slower months, can show you what buying could involve.
We can look at how a first home or investment property fits income that can bunch up after storms.
A lender decides how it assesses income that varies, and a broker arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:
Once the roofing years are behind you, what would you like a good week to look like?
Starting early can give you more choice over when you finish and how you spend the years that follow.
We’ll map your retirement with you, including any move into quoting, inspections or running jobs from the ground.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. A move into quoting, inspecting or supervising can bring a steadier income and change how long you choose to keep working.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could the tax side of a big season be planned so more of it goes to your goals?
Tax planned alongside super and savings can help more of a busy season reach the goals you’ve set.
We can work through the tax side of a big season with you, alongside an accountant who lodges your return.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. What you can claim for safety gear, tools and vehicles, and whether to trade as a sole trader or a company if you take on a crew, are confirmed by an accountant.
Together, we’ll work through:

Roofing is skilled, physical work that keeps homes dry and families comfortable, done high up and in every season. Each sheet, tile and flashing you fix in place is there to protect someone’s home for years. We’d like to understand your working life first: how your weeks run, what you enjoy outside work and what you hope your money can do for you. Then we’ll build advice around those answers, with you involved in every decision.
A strong run of work can go towards the things you care about most: a home of your own, time away with family or friends, a roofing business of your own one day, or the choice to ease back when you’re ready. If someone at home relies on your pay, they’ll be part of the plan too. Whatever you’re aiming for, we’ll help you plan for it season by season, with the years after roofing in view.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
It depends on the insurer and on what your work involves. When you apply, insurers usually ask about your age and job, and roof work is part of that assessment, so the terms and premium offered can differ from one insurer to the next. An application can be offered on standard terms, with a premium loading, with an exclusion for a named condition, deferred for a period, or declined. The insurer decides.
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working, subject to the policy’s definitions. We can compare suitable options across several insurers with you before you apply.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.

What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
Default cover inside super can usually be issued without medical checks, though it may carry pre-existing condition rules set out in the fund’s PDS, and increasing it is usually underwritten like any other application. Cover you apply for outside super usually comes with questions about your age and job.
Closing an account when you merge super can end the cover held in it.
This is general information that doesn’t take into account your goals, finances or needs, so consider whether it suits you before acting on it. We can compare what you hold before anything changes.
Your job is one of the things an insurer looks at, so roof work can affect the premium and the terms you’re offered. Each insurer assesses occupations in its own way, which means the same duties can be treated differently from one insurer to another.
Since 5 October 2021, the duty when applying for consumer life cover is to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, which means answering the questions asked with reasonable care. If you leave out important details, the insurer may change or cancel your cover or refuse a claim (Moneysmart).
We can help you describe your work clearly and compare options, and the insurer makes the final decision.
A comparison site can show a range of policies and a rough idea of price, which is a useful place to start. It may not include every policy on the market, and it can’t see how your own roofing duties, any cover in your super or your household budget fit together.
Advice starts with the work you actually do on roofs, then compares suitable options across several insurers, checks what you already hold and sizes the cover to your income and debts. We can go through it with you before you apply, and the insurer still assesses any application.
Generally not your own income. Public liability and tool cover are business insurance, there for claims against the business and for its equipment. Some packages include an accident and sickness policy, which is separate general insurance with its own terms, so a general insurance broker is the person to explain it.
Personal cover works differently: income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working, and life and TPD cover pay a lump sum on the policy’s terms.
We can look at the personal side with you, alongside any business cover you hold.
Plan the whole year rather than the busiest part of it. A run of repair work can be followed by quieter months, and no season is predictable. Points to work through:
We can build the plan with you and review it after each season.
Yes. An apprentice, a roofer on an ABN or the owner of a small crew can all start here.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring details of any cover you hold, your super statements, recent payslips or invoices and a short description of the work you do on roofs. We can talk face to face or over video.
