Pay by the hour, day or job, gaps between jobs, a yearly medical and a possible move to supervising all connect. We’ll help you plan around each of them, from your first dive job to running a team.

What we advise on
What could income protection do at home if illness or injury meant time away from dive work?
Part of your income can come through after a waiting period, subject to the policy’s terms and exclusions and the insurer’s assessment.
Together, we’ll go over life, TPD and income protection from the insurers willing to consider your work.
Income protection can pay a share of your pre-tax income if illness or injury stops you working, usually based on your earnings in the 12 months before, and Moneysmart says most policies offer a waiting period between 14 days and two years. Insurers usually ask about your age and job when you apply, so the type of dive work you do is part of the picture. The insurer decides on applications and claims.

Where could the money from a strong run of dive jobs go?
Giving that money a plan before it arrives can put it towards bills, savings and goals of your own.
We can build one budget with you around the income you can rely on, rather than your best month.
Dive work can be paid by the hour, the day or the job, and allowances can move with depth or travel. Bills keep arriving between jobs, so we start with the income you can rely on and plan anything above it. If you employ other people, from 1 July 2026 their super must generally reach their fund within 7 business days after payday.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could a share of your strong months build your super for the years after dive work?
Regular amounts set aside from dive work can add up over a working life, within the contribution caps.
We’ll map who pays your super with you, on wages, as a casual, on a day rate and on contract.
On a contract, a business may still have to pay super if you’re paid mainly for your labour. The ATO’s tests ask if over half the contract’s dollar value is your labour, if pay doesn’t depend on a set result, and if the work can’t be delegated. An ABN doesn’t settle it, and a hirer doesn’t have to pay under a contract with your company, trust or partnership. An accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand.
Together, we’ll work through:
Which tax decisions could a strong year of dive work bring up?
Setting money aside and timing big decisions with an accountant can leave fewer surprises at tax time.
We can talk through the tax side of job to job dive work with you, alongside an accountant.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. On contract, part of each invoice may end up owed as tax, so an accountant can estimate the amount to set aside. What you can claim for courses, medicals and dive gear is also a question for an accountant.
Together, we’ll work through:
From a first dive job to supervising, which next step would you like to plan?
Costing a step before you take it can show what it may pay and what changes at home.
Together, we’ll cost your next step in dive work and set it out in a financial plan, or Statement of Advice.
Dive work can change over a career, from trainee to a first job, from wages to a day rate, or from diving to supervising. Each step can bring its own course costs, requirements and change in pay. We plan the money side with you, and a training school or certification body can confirm what it requires.
Together, we’ll work through:
When you’re ready to finish dive work, what would you like your days to look like?
Starting on a plan early can give you more choices about when you finish and how you spend those years.
We’ll build your retirement plan with you on super and savings first, with any gear or business as additions.
Super and savings can form the base of your retirement income, because a sale of gear or a dive business isn’t certain. Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over.
Together, we’ll work through:
Buying a home or investment property: how could that fit with pay that moves from job to job?
Repayments tested against your slowest stretch of work can show what a purchase might ask of your budget.
We can test a purchase with you against your slowest stretch of work, and a broker arranges any loan.
A lender decides how it reads day rates, invoices and allowances, and a broker compares lenders and arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:

Read moreCommercial dive work is skilled work that few people ever see. Ports, bridges, pipelines and fish farms are looked after because a team planned the job with care and looked out for one another on the day. We’d like to hear about the work you do, how you’re paid and what matters to you away from it. From there, we can help you shape a plan around your income and the life you’d like.
A strong run of jobs can open up some choices. That money could go towards a home, a trip with the people you love, a move into supervising or more freedom in the years after dive work. If someone depends on your pay, they can be part of the plan as well. Your goals may change along the way, so we can review the plan with you each year through ongoing advice and keep it in step with them.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
A business may have to. The ATO treats a contractor as an employee for super if more than half the contract’s dollar value is for their labour, payment doesn’t depend on a set result and the work can’t be delegated. An ABN doesn’t settle it, but a contract with your own company, trust or partnership means the hirer doesn’t have to pay.
Dive gear or other non-labour items in your price can change the sum, so it helps if labour and gear are detailed separately. An accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand, and we can plan your super with you around what’s paid and what’s yours to add.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
Where the national award system applies, your employer’s industry and your duties generally decide it, rather than your job title. One industry award covers underwater services to industry, with separate sections for inshore and offshore divers, and employers in other industries can sit under other awards.
A day rate doesn’t settle the question by itself, and Fair Work is the place to check your award. We can build your budget and super plan with you from the pay you receive.
A plan can start from a full year of your income, rather than your strongest month. Points to work through:
Income protection is generally for illness or injury rather than losing a job, so gaps between jobs are planned with savings. We can build that budget with you.
Workplace safety rules can require a diver to hold a current certificate of medical fitness, generally renewed yearly, and a doctor can set conditions on the type of diving work. Questions about your fitness to dive sit with that doctor.
The financial side is a plan that allows for a change in the work open to you, without predicting one: your savings, a budget that doesn’t depend on one type of job, and how much of your income relies on dive work. We can build that with you, along with your super and any cover you hold. If your medical isn’t renewed or comes with new conditions, we can help you understand what that could mean for your plan.
It can come from more than one place, depending on your work and what you hold:
We can plan with you how these fit together, and the scheme or insurer decides any claim.
A financial adviser starts by reading what the cover says: the amounts, the definitions, the cost and the job on record. Default cover through super is for a set amount, so it might not match your needs.
From there, we can go through options with you from the insurers willing to consider your work, beside your super, savings and goals. The insurer decides on any application.
ADAS, the diver accreditation scheme, says onshore supervisors need evidence of working as an occupational diver, with a set amount of time and experience and an employer’s support. Offshore certification has its own process. Points to plan:
We can cost the move with you before you enrol.
Yes. Retirement planning for dive work starts with how long you’d like to keep diving, and whether supervising, inspection or training is part of the later years. If you’re on contract, super may be yours to plan, unless a business has to pay it.
We’d build the plan on super and savings, with any gear or dive business as an addition, as a sale isn’t certain. You can read more about our retirement advice.
We’re a national service, so you can meet with us by phone or video from anywhere in Australia. We also have offices in three cities:
