Your pay and its allowances, your super and any cover inside it, and a busy run of work all connect. We’ll help you plan for all three, from your first licence to running your own jobs.

What we advise on
Have you set up a plan for your income if illness or injury ever kept you off the tools?
With income protection, part of your income can keep coming in after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working.
We’ll set out the cover choices that fit electrical work, from live equipment to roofs and ladders.
When you apply for cover, insurers ask about your occupation and duties, so answering accurately about live work, heights or mine sites matters. Income protection can pay part of your income if illness or injury stops you working, subject to the policy’s definitions, waiting period and the insurer’s assessment. Some super funds include default income protection for members in the electrical industry, on their own terms.
Together, we’ll work through:
Is your super in a fund you chose, or one an employer picked for you?
A side-by-side comparison can help you choose a fund that’s working for you, not just the one you were given.
We can compare super funds with you on fees, investment options and the insurance each one holds.
Your award may name a default fund, and you can usually choose your own instead. A fund that markets to the trade may or may not suit you: fees, investment options and the cover inside it all matter, along with who pays for that cover.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could overtime and travel pay help you save for the things you want next?
Knowing what your regular pay covers can let overtime build a buffer, then go towards a holiday, a home or new tools.
We can build your budget around the full pay you earn, including allowances and any overtime.
Award pay for electricians can include an hourly rate, all-purpose industry and licence allowances, a tool allowance and travel or distant work allowances, with overtime on top. Solar and battery work is supported by a government scheme legislated to end in 2030, and from 1 May 2026 the support for batteries steps down every six months. We can help you build a buffer in busier periods.
Together, we’ll work through:
As you move between sites, employers and contracts, what could a financial plan do for you?
Reviewing it with each new site or contract can keep your pay, super and cover suited to the work you do.
We’ll build a plan that moves with you between domestic, commercial, solar, mine site and contracting work.
Each branch of the trade can change how you’re paid, which award or agreement applies, and the cover and super that come with the job. An electrician employed by an onsite building and construction business may be covered by a different award or an enterprise agreement rather than the Electrical Award. A new licence, a new employer or a move onto an ABN are natural points to review the plan.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could buying a home look like through the busy and quieter stretches of work?
Setting aside a buffer for quieter months can make repayments easier to manage and a home easier to plan for.
We can look at how a first home or investment property fits a trade income that includes allowances and overtime.
A lender decides how much of your allowances and overtime it will count, and your broker arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall or rent stops. From 1 July 2027 negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, with properties held at 12 May 2026 exempt. Your accountant can confirm which rules apply to you.
Together, we’ll work through:
When you step back from the tools one day, how do you want to spend that time?
Planning ahead, at any stage of your career, can give you real choice about when and how you step back.
We’ll show you how a later career, on the tools or in an office role, shapes your retirement plan.
You can generally reach your super from preservation age, which is 60 for anyone born on or after 1 July 1964, once a condition of release such as retirement is met. A move into project management, design, estimating, sales or training can change your income and how long you choose to keep working, so the plan is worth revisiting at each step.
Together, we’ll work through:
After a strong year, could more of that income be working for your future?
Some of a strong year’s income can go into super, within the caps, and help build your future.
We can work with your accountant’s advice on allowances, tools, vehicles and contributions as part of your plan.
How allowances are taxed, what you can claim for tools, vehicles and protective clothing, and whether to trade as a sole trader or a company are questions for an accountant. We use the result to shape decisions about super, investing and cover.
Together, we’ll work through:
Cover for Live Work and Heights

The Default Cover in Your Fund

Choosing a Super Fund
Funds compared on fees, investment options and insurance, before any switch is made.

A budget that sets out your base rate, allowances and overtime separately.
Solar and Battery Income
A plan for install income that works with the scheme’s legislated end in 2030.
A Strong Year’s Surplus
Choices made for a busy year’s extra income: a buffer, debt, super or investing.
An Apprentice’s Incentive Payments
Any incentive payments an apprentice is eligible for, planned into their budget.
Moving Into Design or Project Work
A plan for the change in income when you move into design or project roles.

Becoming an electrician takes years of training before the licence is in your hands, and the work asks for care and focus on every job. It’s a skill you’ve worked hard for, and the weeks can be long. We’ll take time to listen to how you work and what you’d like your money to do for you, then help you build a plan that suits the way you’re paid and the life you want outside the job.
A good run of work can open up real choices: a home of your own, time with the people you care about, a contracting business of your own, or more freedom in how you spend your weeks. If a partner, children or parents rely on your income, we’ll help you plan for them too. Wherever the trade takes you, we can help you work towards the life you want now and in the years ahead.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
No single fund suits every electrician. Your award may list a default fund, and some funds promote themselves to the electrical trade, but whether one suits you depends on its fees, its investment options, the insurance inside it and who pays for that insurance.
Comparing funds on all of those together gives a fairer picture than any one feature, and it’s worth checking what would happen to any default cover before you move.
This is general information that doesn’t take into account your goals, finances or needs, so consider whether it suits you before acting on it. We can compare funds against your own situation and help you work out whether the insurance in each is the best suited cover for your situation.
It depends on your fund. Some funds give members in the electrical industry default income protection, and its terms can depend on staying with the fund, working in the industry or having contributions paid. Changing fund or moving onto an ABN can change that cover or end it, depending on the fund’s terms.
Your annual statement or online account shows what you hold.
We can check your cover before you make the move, and look at cover outside super if it would suit you.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It can. When you apply, an insurer asks about your occupation and the duties you perform, and work on live equipment, on roofs or at heights may be part of that assessment. Answering each question accurately matters, since the answers you give can affect how a later claim is assessed.
Each insurer decides how it treats your duties, which can affect the premium, the terms offered or any exclusions.
We can help you describe your work clearly and compare suitable options, and the insurer makes the final decision on any application.
It depends on the policy. Each income protection policy has its own definition of the income it insures, and whether regular allowances or overtime are included varies between policies and insurers.
For an electrician paid an hourly rate plus industry, licence and travel allowances, that definition can make a real difference to the monthly benefit. Your payslips and tax returns show the full picture of what you earn.
We can compare how suitable policies treat your pay, aiming for cover that reflects the income you earn, allowances included where the policy allows, and the insurer confirms the terms at application.
Your fund’s online account is a quick way to see the cover you hold and to change it yourself, and it’s useful to know your way around it. Advice adds a view of the whole plan: whether a change suits the way electrical work is assessed, what happens to the cover if you change employer or move onto an ABN, and whether holding some cover outside super could suit you.
We can go through those questions with you first, and any new or increased cover is still subject to the insurer’s assessment.
Start with the dates that are already set. The small-scale renewable energy scheme, which supports many home solar and battery installs, is legislated to end in 2030, and from 1 May 2026 the support for batteries steps down every six months.
Those dates don’t predict how much work there will be, but they give you something firm to plan with. A buffer built in busier periods, a clear view of your fixed costs and cover that suits your work can all give you room to decide.
We can build a plan with you around those dates, and review it as the rules change.
Yes, whatever stage of the trade you’re at.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring a recent payslip showing your allowances, your super fund’s latest statement and details of any cover you hold. Tell us where you are with your licence and your work, and what you’d like the next few years to look like.
