Your licence and any quota, income that follows the catch, the boat and any crew all affect each other. We can help you map the choices ahead, from buying in to selling, leasing out or handing on.

What we advise on
How might your years on the water set you up for later in life?
Planning the choices ahead can help your licence and the work behind it support the years after fishing.
We can work through a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, for any commercial fishing licence or quota you hold.
Fishing rights such as quota can generally be kept and fished, sold, leased out or transferred, depending on the fishery’s rules, and each choice turns them into money in a different way. Where a fishery is managed by quota, the catch each unit is worth can change as the regulator sets the total allowable catch. A lawyer prepares wills and agreements, an accountant advises on structure and tax, and any transfer goes through the fisheries regulator.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could a strong season help cover the months when the boat stays in port?
Budgeting around the seasons can set aside money from good trips for closed seasons, weather days and bills.
We’ll start with your household costs, then build a budget around income that arrives trip by trip and season by season.
Fishing income can depend on the catch, the price it fetches, the weather and how long a season stays open, while household bills arrive every month. Savings for the quieter months can be set from your own fixed costs rather than a set figure. In harder years, the Rural Financial Counselling Service, an Australian Government program, offers free, confidential financial counselling to eligible farmers, fishers and foresters experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship.
Together, we’ll work through:
How would the household bills be met if illness or injury kept you ashore for a while?
Income protection can replace part of your income after a waiting period, so household bills and any loan repayments can continue.
We can look at income protection, life and TPD cover with you, with the work you do at sea in view.
Insurers set terms from your health, occupation and pastimes, so your duties at sea, on deck and with gear are described accurately when you apply. Many income protection policies base the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury, so a poor season can shape it. Workers compensation is separate, through a state, territory or Commonwealth scheme, and whether it covers share-paid crew depends on the scheme.
Together, we’ll work through:
Which goals could a strong season’s income go towards, with the tax planned ahead?
Looking at tax over several seasons, not one, can help a strong year support the goals you’ve set.
Together, we’ll set out a tax plan beside super and savings, with an accountant advising on the detail.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. The ATO treats fishing as primary production, so income averaging can even out tax on fishing income over a maximum of 5 years, where you’re eligible. Fishing permits and quotas can be statutory licences, and the ATO says any dealing in one has capital gains tax consequences.
Together, we’ll work through:
What might a strong season add to savings of your own, away from the boat?
Super contributions in stronger years can build savings for later that don’t depend on the next catch.
We can set a contribution plan with you that suits fishing income, whether you own the boat or crew on one.
If you fish as a sole trader or in a partnership, the ATO says you don’t have to pay super for yourself, so contributions are yours to choose. For crew on a share, whether super must be paid depends on the ATO’s tests, including whether you’re paid mainly for your labour and not for a result. From 1 July 2026 the general concessional cap is $32,500, and caps are indexed.
Together, we’ll work through:
Have you pictured what life after fishing could look like for you?
Setting out each source of income for later can help you pick a finishing date that suits you.
We’ll show you how income from a sale, a quota lease or super could fund retirement, including the Age Pension.
A sale can bring a lump sum, while lease income from quota can move with the catch limit and the lease market. Services Australia may treat a licence, quota or boat transferred to family for less than its value as a gift for the Age Pension. Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over.
Together, we’ll work through:
Would owning property ashore suit your plans alongside the work on the water?
Checking repayments against a quiet season first can show what property could fit around fishing income.
We can explain how property ashore could spread your wealth beyond fishing, with any loan arranged through a broker.
Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt. For gains accruing after 1 July 2027, the 50% CGT discount is replaced by indexation and a 30% minimum tax.
Together, we’ll work through:
The Licence and Your Retirement

Sell, Lease or Hand On
Each way of turning fishing rights into money, compared on income and timing, with an accountant on the tax.
A Handover to Family
A transfer to family planned with the Age Pension gift rules and any will in view.
A Buyback Payment
A closure or adjustment payment worked through, from the tax with an accountant to what comes next.
Savings for Closed Seasons
A buffer sized to your costs for weather days, closures and poor catches.
Cover for Work at Sea
Income protection, life and TPD cover compared with you for the work you do on board.
Crew Pay in the Budget
Share payments and any super obligation planned into cashflow, with an accountant confirming what applies.
Super of Your Own
Contributions planned in stronger seasons, so retirement rests on more than one asset.

Commercial fishing is skilled, demanding work, planned around tides, weather and seasons, and built up one trip at a time. Some fishing businesses have been in a family for generations; others began with a single licence and years of hard work. We start by listening to how your year runs, on the water and at home, and what you’d like the years ahead to hold. Then we work through the decisions with you, in the order that matters to you.
What you earn from fishing can go towards the things you care about away from the water: a home, travel, helping family, or the freedom to choose when to ease back. You might keep fishing for many years yet, take on a boat of your own, hand a business on or sell up one day. Whichever you choose, we’ll help you work towards it, with a plan for the years on the water and the years after.
Every financial decision impacts the next

Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
The ATO lists fishing permits and quotas among statutory licences, and says any dealing in one has capital gains tax consequences. A sale can bring a capital gain or loss, and small business CGT concessions may be available if you meet their conditions. Leasing out quota brings income over time rather than a lump sum, and an accountant can confirm how it’s taxed.
For gains accruing after 1 July 2027, indexation and a 30% minimum tax generally replace the 50% CGT discount, and the small business CGT concessions continue. We can plan what the proceeds or lease income could do for you. This is general information that doesn’t take into account your goals, finances or needs, so consider whether it suits you before acting on it.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
Yes, if you’re eligible. The ATO counts fishing as primary production, and farm management deposits are open to individuals, including partners and trust beneficiaries, but not to companies. A deposit is generally deductible when made and assessable income when withdrawn, and one withdrawn within 12 months generally isn’t deductible unless an exception applies.
One exception doesn’t fit a business that only fishes: early access for severe rainfall deficiency requires that you’re not solely carrying on commercial fishing. The exception for an applicable natural disaster is separate. A buffer for a poor season is worth planning without the drought exception in mind.
An accountant confirms your eligibility and the tax, and we can weigh deposits beside super and savings with you.
It depends on the arrangement. The ATO says a business may have to pay super for a contractor who is paid mainly for their labour, paid for their own labour and skills rather than for a result, and can’t delegate the work, even if they have an ABN.
How that test applies to a share of the catch on your boat is for an accountant or the ATO to confirm. Once it’s clear, we can plan any super, along with the share payments, into the business’s cashflow. If you crew for a share and no super is paid for you, we can plan contributions of your own.
A broker’s valuation or recent trade prices can show what a licence or quota might sell for, which is useful when you’re weighing an offer. A valuation prices the asset, so it isn’t designed to set out what the money could do for you afterwards.
Advice works through that part: what you’d live on, whether selling or leasing suits your plans, tax timing with an accountant, super, cover and the household. We can work through it with you before you decide.
Licences and quota can generally be transferred within the rules of the fishery, with the fisheries regulator handling the transfer itself. Three other things come with it:
We can plan the order and timing with you, including income for whoever steps back.
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working. Many policies base the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before the illness or injury, so a poor season can lower it, and each policy has its own definition of disability.
When you apply, the insurer asks about your health, occupation and duties, such as deck work and time at sea, and answering with reasonable care matters. An application can be offered on standard terms, with a premium loading, with an exclusion for a named condition, deferred for a period, or declined. The insurer decides. We can compare options with you before you apply.
Yes. The first conversation starts from where you are now, whether that’s crewing for a share, running your own boat or thinking about stepping back.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
Useful things to bring: your last two tax returns, licence and any quota details, any loan statements, super statements, details of any cover you hold and a will if you have one. We can meet in person or online.
