Leave built up over the years, your super, physical outdoor work and an employer that can restructure all connect. We’ll help you plan them together, from your first season on a crew to stepping back.

What we advise on
Whether you stay with one council or move to the next, what would you like your working years to build?
Revisiting the plan at each new council or role can keep your leave, super and cover suited to your goals.
We’ll build a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, around a local government career and any move between councils.
Ask the HR team at any council offering you a role whether your service and long service leave carry across; it depends on your state and any break between jobs. If you’re in the Fair Work system and, within 3 months, join the business taking on your work in much the same role, most entitlements carry over, though the new employer might not have to recognise your service for redundancy, annual leave or long service leave. State systems may differ.
Together, we’ll work through:
Over a working life with councils, what could your super help you do when work ends?
Knowing which pay and leave earn super can show where contributions of your own could add to the balance you retire on.
Together, we’ll trace how your pay, any allowances and your leave reach your super, and where contributions of your own could help.
The ATO counts allowances for adverse conditions, such as working at heights or in the cold, wet or heat, in the earnings your employer pays super on, and long service leave you take while employed counts too. Unused leave paid out when you leave a job doesn’t count, and overtime generally doesn’t where your ordinary hours are clearly identified.
Together, we’ll work through:
How would the household keep up with costs if illness or injury kept you off the crew for a while?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, helping with the bills and keeping your plans going.
We’ll weigh up with you the cover that fits outdoor council work, from parks and roadsides to depots and tips.
Workers compensation is separate, through a state, territory or Commonwealth scheme. Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working, at work or away from it, and many policies base the benefit on earnings in the 12 months before. When you apply, answer every question asked, including those about your duties, with reasonable care.
Together, we’ll work through:
When the outdoor years are behind you, what would you like your days to be filled with?
Timing your leave, super and any move to lighter duties together can help you finish work on terms you’ve chosen.
We can plan the step back with you, from heavy outdoor work to lighter duties, fewer days or a set finish date.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. Long service leave taken while you’re employed earns super and unused leave paid out when you finish doesn’t, so when and how you use any balance is worth planning.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could your council pay help you save for over the next few years?
Setting a budget on regular pay, with any extras given their own goal, can turn each pay into visible progress.
We can set up a budget with you on regular pay, with any allowances or call-out pay kept for savings and goals.
Outdoor council pay can include allowances and call-out work that come and go with the weather and the season. A budget built on regular pay keeps those extras free for goals, and a buffer started early can help if a service review is under way and its outcome isn’t known yet.
Together, we’ll work through:
When a lump sum arrives, such as leave paid out or a redundancy payment, what would you like it to do for you?
Planning what the money does next, once the tax is known, can help more of it go towards the goals you’ve set.
We can work through what a redundancy payment or leave paid out could do next, with an accountant advising on the tax.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. How a redundancy payment and any unused leave paid out are taxed is for an accountant to confirm, and we can then plan what the money does next, from debt and savings to super within the caps.
Together, we’ll work through:
Where could a home of your own fit among the goals you’re working on?
Sizing a loan to your regular pay, with a buffer behind it, can show what a home could look like for you.
Together, we’ll look at how a first home or investment property could fit council pay, with any loan arranged through a broker.
A lender decides how much of any allowance or call-out pay it will count, and a broker arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:

Each morning a town wakes up to work that council crews have already begun: parks mown, potholes filled, bins emptied and fallen branches cleared after a storm. It’s done in every kind of weather, and a whole community relies on it. We’ll take the time to listen to how your work runs and what you’d like your money to do, then help you build a plan around your pay, your leave and the life you want away from work.
The years you give to a crew can lead towards the things you care about: a home of your own, a trip away, a new role, or a gentler pace later in life. If others count on your pay, such as a partner, children or parents, we’ll include them in the plan. Whatever stage of a council career you’re at, we can help you plan for the years ahead and the goals that matter to you, one clear step at a time.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
It depends on the rules where you work and on the break between the two jobs. In some states, service with one council can count towards long service leave at the next, provided the gap between jobs stays within the period the rules allow. A move outside local government may be treated differently.
Before you sign, ask the new council’s HR team to confirm in writing how your service and leave will be treated, and check any enterprise agreement that applies to the role.
We can plan your leave, super and cover around the answer with you, so the move fits the rest of your plan.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
If you’re in the Fair Work system and, within 3 months, take much the same role with the contractor taking over your work, your council service counts towards most entitlements, though the contractor might not have to recognise it for redundancy, annual leave or long service leave. Councils in some states sit outside that system.
Super already in your account stays yours. If you hold a defined benefit, Moneysmart notes you can usually stay in the fund while you’re eligible, some funds offer benefits you may lose if you leave, and you generally can’t rejoin. Changing employer can affect that eligibility.
This is general information, not a view on accepting a transfer. We can set out with you what each choice could mean for your leave, super and budget.
It depends on how the leave is paid. When you take long service leave and your employer pays it, the ATO counts it in the earnings your employer pays super on. Unused long service leave paid out when you leave a job, whether you resign, retire or are made redundant, isn’t counted, so no employer super is paid on it.
That makes the timing of any large balance part of your retirement plan, not only your holiday plans. Taking some leave before you finish can change what reaches your super.
We can weigh the options with you, with an accountant confirming the tax on any payout.
A redundancy calculator can give a quick estimate from the service and pay you enter, which is a useful place to start. Under the National Employment Standards, where they apply to you, the minimum is worked out on your base rate for ordinary hours, without loadings, allowances, overtime or penalty rates, and an award or agreement may set more.
Advice looks at what the payment has to do: the household budget until the next income, any leave paid out, cover that may end with the job, and your super and retirement plans. An accountant confirms the tax.
The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers free, confidential help if bills or debts start to build. We can plan the months ahead with you.
Generally, yes. The ATO counts allowances paid for adverse conditions, such as working at heights, in confined spaces or in the cold, wet or heat, in the earnings your employer pays super on. If an award covers you, it may pay an allowance for outdoor and other adverse conditions, and an enterprise agreement may set its own.
Overtime is different: where your ordinary hours are clearly identified, it generally doesn’t count, so a storm clean-up or weekend call-out paid as overtime doesn’t add to your compulsory super, though an award or agreement can add its own super obligations.
Your payslips and fund statements show what’s been paid. We can check them with you and plan any contributions of your own.
Outdoor work doesn’t rule it out on its own. When you apply, the insurer asks about your occupation, your duties and your health. For council crews, duties can include heavy lifting, mobile plant, work near traffic or at heights, and long days in the sun. Since 5 October 2021, the duty when applying for consumer life cover is to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, which means answering the questions asked with reasonable care.
An application can be offered on standard terms, with a premium loading, with an exclusion for a named condition, deferred for a period, or declined. The insurer decides.
We can compare suitable options with you before you apply.
Yes, at every stage, from a first season on a council crew to your final years before you finish.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring payslips that show any allowances, a leave statement with any long service leave balance, your super statements, including any defined benefit statement, details of any cover you hold, and any restructure or job offer letter.
