Your shift pay, long service leave, any driver medicals and the years before you finish all connect. We help you plan them together, for the years you drive and the years after.

What we advise on
Once you finish driving, by choice or after a medical, what would you like retirement to look like?
Mapping your super and savings against a planned date and an earlier one can help you be ready for either.
Together, we’ll plan your finishing date, whether you choose it, ease into it with fewer shifts or a medical brings it forward.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. From preservation age, a transition to retirement income stream can top up reduced pay while you keep working, as regular payments rather than a lump sum.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could the super from your driving years be doing more for you?
Checking what your employer pays and how your fund invests can show whether your driving years could build more for retirement.
We can map how your employer pays your super, which pay counts towards it and whether adding more suits you.
Shift penalties count towards the super your employer must pay, while overtime generally doesn’t where your award or agreement clearly sets ordinary hours. Caps are indexed and can change each year: for 2026-27 the concessional cap is $32,500, with unused amounts from earlier years available if your total super balance was under $500,000 on the previous 30 June.
Together, we’ll work through:
Has your income been planned for in case illness or injury takes you off the road or rails?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, to help with the fortnightly bills.
We can compare how TPD and income protection definitions would treat a driver who no longer meets the medical standard to drive.
Own occupation TPD covers being unable to work again in your own job, and Moneysmart says it’s usually only available outside super. Any occupation TPD covers being unable to ever work again in a job suited to your education, training or experience, so it’s less likely to pay out. Each insurer sets its own definition.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could penalty rates and extra shifts add up to if they weren’t needed for the bills?
Covering the bills from base pay can leave penalty rates and extra shifts free to grow your savings each fortnight.
We’ll build a household budget with you on base pay, with penalty rates and any broken-shift pay treated as extra.
If you drive buses under the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award, a broken shift has an unpaid break of more than 60 minutes, and early or late work is work before 6.00 am or after 7.00 pm. Enterprise agreements may set different terms. A move to day-only or part-time work can take those penalties out of your pay.
Together, we’ll work through:
After a long career, what could any leave or payout help you do next?
Planning around any leave or payout can mean the tax comes as no surprise and the rest is ready for your plans.
We’ll go through what long service leave, a payout or packaging could mean for your plan, with an accountant on the tax.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. Unused long service leave paid out when you finish may be taxed differently depending on when the leave accrued and the reason you leave, and an accountant can confirm your position. The ATO also publishes a guide to what bus drivers can claim.
Together, we’ll work through:
As your hours, health or employer change, how could your pay, super and cover stay suited to you?
Revisiting a financial plan whenever hours, health or employer change can keep it right for the driving years ahead.
We’ll build a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, for your driving career, reviewed as your hours, health or employer change.
A medical review, a move to part-time driving, a new operator or a partner retiring can each change your income, super and cover at once. We bring those parts into the plan, and work alongside any union, employer HR team, doctor or accountant already involved, each within their own role.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could a home loan fit comfortably on a driver’s income alongside your other plans?
Seeing repayments beside your other plans and finishing date can help you pick a time to buy that suits a driver’s pay.
We can weigh how a home loan, any investment property and your finishing date fit together on a driver’s income.
Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt. For gains accruing after 1 July 2027, indexation and a 30% minimum tax generally replace the 50% CGT discount.
Together, we’ll work through:

Life After Your Last Shift
The time, travel and pace you’d like after driving, planned into how your savings are used.

Driving a bus or a train is work people set their day by. Commuters, school students and whole towns count on the first service before sunrise and the last one home at night, and a working day can run straight through or come in two halves. We start by listening: to how your days run, what you value in the work and what you’d like the years ahead to hold.
The work you put in can go towards the things that matter to you: more mornings at home, time with the people you love, travel, or an easier pace when you’re ready for one. Whether you’d like to keep driving for years yet, cut back to fewer shifts or set a date to finish, we can help you plan for it and work towards the life you’d like to live, now and after your last shift.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
It depends on whether the finding is temporary or permanent, and on the leave and cover you hold. For train drivers, the national rail health standard includes categories for being temporarily unfit and permanently unfit, and whether and how often bus drivers need a medical differs between the states and territories. Your doctor, employer and any union can explain what the finding means for your job.
On the money side, we can look at the leave you could draw on, any income protection or TPD cover and its definitions, workers compensation, if eligible, where the cause is work-related, and how long your savings could last.
If you’d like someone to talk to, free, confidential support is available from Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 and Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It depends on where your entitlement comes from, your plans and the tax. The Fair Work Ombudsman says most employees’ long service leave comes from state or territory law, and for some it comes from a pre-modern award or an enterprise agreement instead, so the rules on taking and paying it differ. A few points to weigh:
Your employer can confirm your entitlement, and an accountant can confirm the tax. We can set out each option with you.
From preservation age, you may be able to. Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964. Under the ATO’s transition to retirement rules, you can reduce your working hours and start a transition to retirement income stream:
Whether you can drop shifts depends on your employer and agreement. We can model the pay, super and income stream together with you.
A payslip or payroll portal is a useful record of the leave you’ve built up, and it’s worth checking it from time to time.
Advice looks at what that balance could do in your plan: whether taking the leave, using it to ease into retirement or being paid out suits the date you’d like to finish, how it sits beside super and any transition to retirement income stream, and what an accountant says about the tax on each option.
We can set the options side by side with you, using your own balance and dates.
It depends on the cover your fund holds for you, if any, and how it defines a claim. Moneysmart says own occupation TPD, which looks at your own job, is usually only available outside super. Any occupation TPD covers being unable to ever work again in a job suited to your education, training or experience, so a driver who can no longer drive but could do other work may not meet it. Income protection in super, if you hold it, may pay part of your income after a waiting period, on its terms.
We can read your fund’s cover with you and compare it with what personal cover could add. The insurer makes the final decision on any claim or application.
When a contract or franchise moves to a new operator, your employer can change, and with it the arrangements an employer sets. Points worth checking with the new employer, HR or any union:
Keep copies of your payslips, leave balances and super statements from before the change. We can review your cover, super and plan with you once the new terms are clear.
Yes, whether you’ve just finished driver training or have been driving for many years.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring a recent payslip showing your leave balances, your latest super statement, any defined benefit statement and details of any cover you hold. We can meet in person or online, at a time that fits around your shifts.
