Your pay may include salary, shares that vest or a day rate, and one offer or restructure can change it. We help you plan super, cover, any shares and the household as one, at every career step.

What we advise on
As your tech career moves through new roles and offers, what would you like your money to do for you?
A plan reviewed at each new role or offer can help every career move support the goals you’ve set.
We can map with you how salary, any shares and your next role fit into a financial plan, or Statement of Advice.
In tech, pay can include a salary, shares that vest over time or a day rate, and a role can change through a promotion, a restructure or a new offer. When your salary and any shares come from the same company, one change at work can touch both at once. We can set review points with you at a grant, a vest, a new offer or a move to contracting, and plan each one against your goals.
Together, we’ll work through:
When income comes as salary, shares or contract pay, how could tax be planned around your goals?
Setting tax aside as income arrives can make tax time routine and leave the rest for the things you care about.
We’ll plan with you around how shares, salary or a contract can be taxed, with an accountant advising on the detail.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside an accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. Under an employee share scheme (ESS), the ATO says the discount is taxed either in the year you acquire the shares or rights, or at a later deferred taxing point, and the scheme’s rules or a letter from your employer should say which applies.
Together, we’ll work through:
How would the bills be covered if illness or injury kept you away from the keyboard for a while?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, helping with regular bills while you can’t work.
We’ll set out what income protection, life and TPD cover can do, and what leaving a role means for any cover.
Moneysmart says income protection is designed to pay part of your lost income if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. It isn’t cover for income lost when a role ends. On a contract, paid sick leave may not apply, and any cover is yours to arrange.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could any vested shares or extra contract work go towards, once the bills are planned?
Building the budget on your steadiest income can give any shares or extra earnings a purpose you choose.
We can set a household budget with you on the income you can count on, with any shares planned separately.
The value of vested shares can rise or fall after the vesting date, so the household budget can run on regular pay while any shares are given a purpose before they vest. On a contract, paid holidays and sick leave may not apply, and there can be gaps between contracts. We can plan a buffer with you for those weeks and set your regular costs against income you’re confident of.
Together, we’ll work through:
After several job moves, or a switch to contracting, is your super set up the way you want?
Super that follows you between jobs, with contributions planned for any years you contract, can help your balance keep building.
We can check that your super follows each job move, and plan contributions for any years you contract through a company.
When you start a new job, your employer generally pays into your existing super fund unless you choose another; a default fund applies only if you have no fund. If you contract through a company of your own, the ATO says the business you contract with doesn’t have to pay super for you, so how your super is funded is planned with an accountant.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could buying a home fit alongside pay that includes shares or a day rate?
Seeing the deposit, repayments and other goals side by side can help you choose the right time to buy.
We can look with you at funding a deposit from vested shares or savings, and how a purchase fits your wider plan.
Selling shares for a deposit can mean tax on any gain in the year you sell, which an accountant works out. Lenders decide how they assess salary, shares or contract income, and a broker compares loans and arranges any loan you apply for. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall.
Together, we’ll work through:
In a tech career that moves quickly, what would it take to choose when you stop work?
Projecting super and investments from today can show when stopping work could suit you, whether that’s earlier or later.
We’ll work out with you what financial independence could take, with super, investments and any shares counted together.
Financial independence can come earlier or later than a usual retirement age, and money held outside super can fund any years before super can be accessed. Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. Long-held employer shares can be one part of the plan, rather than the whole of it.
Together, we’ll work through:
Shares That Vest This Year
A use planned for each vest before its date, with money set aside for any tax due.
Selling or Holding at Vest
Your goals, the tax and one-company exposure weighed before you decide to sell or hold.
Unvested Shares Through a Layoff
Income, cover and any unvested shares planned for if a layoff or restructure comes.
Contracting Through Your Company
Super, cover and a cash buffer planned for work through a company of your own.
Cashflow Between Contracts
A buffer and a budget planned for the weeks between one contract and the next.
Start-Up Options and Salary
A lower salary with options set beside your current pay, with no value assumed for the options.
Shares in an Overseas Parent
The details a foreign employer gives you, planned into your tax with an accountant.
A Deposit From Vested Shares
Selling shares for a deposit compared with saving one, with an accountant on the tax.

A career in tech can move quickly. A new role, a promotion or a move to contracting can come with little notice, and pay can arrive as a salary, shares or a day rate. We’ll listen to what you want from your work and your life outside it, then help you plan for each change in a way that suits you. When the next opportunity comes along, you can look at it with your own goals already in view.
The plan can include the people and things that matter to you, such as time with family and friends, travel, or a break between roles. If you share your life with a partner, their goals can be part of it too. Whether you stay with one company for years or move between roles and contracts, we’ll help you shape a plan around the life you’d like, now and in the years beyond full-time work.

Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
An RSU (restricted stock unit) is usually a right to acquire shares, which the ATO counts as an employee share scheme (ESS) interest. The discount, the market value less any amount you paid, is assessable income.
Under a taxed-upfront scheme, it’s taxed in the year you acquire the interest. Under a deferral scheme, it’s taxed at a later deferred taxing point; the scheme’s rules or a letter from your employer should say which applies. If you sell within 30 days of a deferred taxing point, the ATO says the taxing point becomes the sale date. A later sale is generally dealt with under the capital gains tax rules.
An accountant confirms the tax on your own shares. We can plan the cash and the timing with you.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.

Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
There’s no single answer, and it depends on your own position. Points worth weighing:
This is general information, not a recommendation to sell or hold. We can look at the decision with you against your goals and the rest of your plan.
Your plan’s terms decide whether unvested shares are kept, forfeited or treated another way when you leave, so the plan documents are the place to start. For tax, the ATO says ceasing employment isn’t a deferred taxing point for ESS interests under deferral schemes, whenever you acquired them.
A redundancy can change several things at once: your income, any cover your employer provided and contributions to your super. Income protection is designed for illness or injury, so it doesn’t pay because a role has ended.
We can plan the months ahead with you, from the budget to cover and super. If bills or debts become hard to manage, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 is free and confidential.
A share plan’s online account is a useful tool. It can show your grants, vesting dates and what you hold, and may let you sell when your plan allows.
Advice looks at the decisions around it: what to do with shares once they vest, how much of your wealth depends on one company, and how a sale fits with a deposit, super or the household budget. An online account can show what you hold, but it may not take in your whole position or your goals.
We can work with what the account shows and help you plan what comes next.
The ATO says a business contracting with a company, trust or partnership doesn’t have to pay super for the person the company employs to do the work. So your super isn’t coming from the client, and how it’s paid through your own company is something to confirm with an accountant.
It can help to plan:
We can plan your contributions with you across contracts and the gaps between them.
They can be. The ATO has a start-up concession for eligible employee share schemes. Where it applies, the discount on eligible interests isn’t taxed under the ESS rules, and any gain or loss when you sell is dealt with under the capital gains tax rules. The company, the scheme and the interests themselves all have to meet conditions, and an accountant can confirm whether a scheme you’re offered qualifies.
The value of start-up options can stay uncertain until there’s a way to sell, such as a sale of the company or a listing, which may never come. We can weigh an offer with you by modelling the lower salary on its own, with no value assumed for the options.
Yes. Wherever you are in a tech career, from a first role to a first vest, a start-up offer or a move to contracting, the conversation starts with your own position.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
Useful things to have with you: any grant or vesting notices and the plan rules, an ESS statement if you have one, a recent payslip or contract, a super statement and details of any cover you hold. We can meet in person or online.
