Possession and night pay, super across your jobs, cover for track work, and the card and track medical that keep you placed all connect. We’ll help you bring them into a financial plan, from a first card to senior years.

What we advise on
How would part of your pay keep coming in if illness or injury kept you off the track?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, helping your household keep to its plans.
We can compare income protection, TPD and life cover with you for work on and around live track.
Since 5 October 2021, the duty when applying for consumer life cover is to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, which means answering the questions asked with reasonable care. Many income protection policies base the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury. Workers compensation is separate, through a state, territory or Commonwealth scheme.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could your possession weekends help you build over the year ahead?
Bills set against ordinary weeks can leave possession pay free for a buffer, a trip or a home deposit.
We can plan your budget on ordinary weeks, with possession, night and weekend pay set out as a planned layer.
If the rail award covers you, weekend hours are paid at higher rates, night shifts attract an allowance, and work away that doesn’t let you return home has reasonable travel and incidental costs reimbursed. Crews working for a contractor that builds or maintains track for others generally fall under the construction award instead, and an enterprise agreement may set different terms. Reimbursed costs repay money spent, so they aren’t savings.
Together, we’ll work through:
Which parts of your pay reach your super, and could a top-up from possession weeks suit you?
Knowing what reaches your fund can show where a top-up from the bigger weeks could add to your retirement.
Together, we’ll trace which parts of your pay reach your fund and whether adding more from possession weeks suits you.
The ATO counts shift penalties and casual loading in the qualifying earnings your employer pays super on. Overtime outside clearly set ordinary hours generally isn’t counted, and nor is an on-call allowance for hours outside ordinary hours. When you start a new job, your employer generally pays into your existing super fund unless you choose another; a default fund applies only if you have no fund.
Together, we’ll work through:
Between one project and the next, what would you like your pay to be building towards?
A financial plan revisited at each move can line up your pay, super and cover with the goals you rank first.
We’ll build a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, around your pay, super and cover as you move between employers.
A network employer, a contractor and a labour hire business can each offer a different package: award or agreement terms, super, leave and any cover. Under an award, a casual loading is generally paid instead of paid leave. A step up, a new employer or a track health assessment that changes your duties are natural points to review the plan.
Together, we’ll work through:
How could any travel or away payments fit with your tax and savings plans?
Sorting each payment by what it’s for can help you plan tax, savings and super from the same clear numbers.
Together, we’ll plan tax alongside your super and savings, with an accountant confirming how allowances and travel payments are taxed.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. The ATO says a travel allowance is assessable to an employee and doesn’t incur fringe benefits tax, while a living-away-from-home allowance is treated as a fringe benefit, with FBT a matter for the employer. An accountant can confirm which applies to you.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could buying a home rest on your ordinary pay, with possession money building the deposit?
Choosing a loan size from ordinary weeks can let possession pay grow the deposit and the buffer.
We can weigh a first home or investment property with you on ordinary pay, with any loan arranged through a broker.
A lender decides how much penalty, allowance and casual pay it counts, and you can arrange any loan through a broker or directly with a lender. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:
Looking past your years on the track, what kind of retirement would you like to plan for?
Planning those years early can let your super and savings support the pace and timing you’d prefer.
We’ll start with the retirement you’d like, then plan the working years and any duties off the track that lead to it.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. Under the national health standard for rail safety workers, track workers in Category 3 have periodic health assessments from age 40, and each one is a sensible point to look at the plan again.
Together, we’ll work through:

The work that keeps a rail network running mostly happens out of sight. While the city sleeps, and across long weekends, crews renew track, test signals and hand the line back in time for the first trains on Monday. It’s skilled, careful work done as a team, often at hours when others are at home. We’ll start by listening to how your work runs and what matters to you away from it, then shape advice that suits the way you’re paid.
Pay that arrives in bursts can still support goals that take years. Planned well, the bigger weeks can go towards a home, time away with the people you care about, helping someone you love or the choice to step back from the track when it suits you. If anyone relies on your income, we’ll keep them in the plan as well. From your first possession to your last, we can help you enjoy the pay you earn today and plan well for the years after it.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.

Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
Many track workers are Category 3 rail safety workers, assessed periodically from age 40. The national standard goes beyond fit or unfit: a worker can be found fit for alternative duties or a lower category of rail safety work. Your doctor, your employer and any union you belong to can explain a finding.
We can plan the money side with you:
Free, confidential support is available from Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 and Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It depends on how the hours are paid. The ATO counts shift penalties and casual loading in the qualifying earnings your employer pays super on. Overtime generally isn’t counted where an award or agreement clearly identifies your ordinary hours, and nor is an on-call allowance for hours outside ordinary hours, though an agreement may require more.
So the pay from a long possession and the super paid on it may not move together. Your payslips and fund statements show what was paid. Caps are indexed and can change each year: for 2026-27 the concessional cap is $32,500, with unused amounts from earlier years available if your total super balance was under $500,000 on the previous 30 June. We can weigh any extra contributions with you.
Points worth checking:
We can review what you hold and combine accounts only after checking the cover in each.
They’re treated differently, so it helps to know which one you receive. The ATO says a travel allowance paid for travelling for work is assessable to you and doesn’t incur fringe benefits tax. A living-away-from-home allowance, paid when your duties require you to live away from your usual home, is a fringe benefit, and FBT on it is a matter for your employer. Costs reimbursed under an award or agreement repay money you’ve already spent.
An accountant can confirm how each payment on your payslip is treated and what you can claim. We can plan the cashflow side with you: keeping reimbursed costs apart from pay, and giving any allowance left over a purpose.
A comparison site can be a useful way to see fees, investment options and past returns side by side, and it can help you shortlist a fund. It may not show the cover in each of your accounts, how your pay moves between possession and ordinary weeks, or what you’d like your super to do for you.
Advice starts with what you hold: which accounts carry cover worth keeping, which fund suits you before any are combined, and how contributions fit the rest of your plan. We can go through your statements with you.
An insurer looks at your answers about your occupation, your duties and your health. For track and signal work, that can include work near live track, operating track machines and work at height on overhead wiring. An application can be offered on standard terms, with a premium loading, with an exclusion for a named condition, deferred for a period, or declined. The insurer decides.
Since 5 October 2021, the duty when applying for consumer life cover is to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, which means answering the questions asked with reasonable care. Many policies base the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury, so a year with fewer possessions can matter. We can compare options with you before you apply.
Yes. New rail track workers with a first card are as welcome as people moving to a network job or in their later years around the track.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring recent payslips from both possession and ordinary weeks, a statement from each super fund you hold, details of any cover and any contract or agreement letter. We can talk face to face or over video.
