Pay tied to your service, any study for a next qualification, leave, care for any child of your own and super all connect. We help you work through each one, from Cert III to director.

What we advise on
From Cert III to a teaching degree or a director’s role, what could each step open up for you?
Mapping each step early can show how it changes your pay, study costs and super, and when it suits you.
We can draw up a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, around your study, your service and any step up you’re considering.
Educators in centres, kindergartens and preschools generally sit under one award and qualified early childhood teachers under another, and some services pay under an agreement instead. A new qualification, a move to another type of service or a step into leadership can change which one applies and what it pays. Payroll or Fair Work can confirm your classification, and we plan around it.
Together, we’ll work through:
Outside the room, what would you like to save for, a car, a trip or a home deposit?
Building the budget on the pay you have today can give each goal a realistic amount and date.
We can build your budget on the pay you have now, with any rise planned before it arrives.
The award that covers educators in centres, kindergartens and preschools has a new classification structure, with further increases set for certain levels in later years. Some services also pay above the award through a government-funded wage increase, where the service takes part. Paid personal and carer’s leave is one balance for sick days and caring for family, and casuals don’t get it.
Together, we’ll work through:
How could you add to your super through part-time years or time away from the room?
Small, regular contributions you choose can help those years count for more when you retire.
We can map how any part-time years, leave and a change of service show up in your super balance.
When you start a new job, your employer generally pays into your existing super fund unless you choose another; a default fund applies only if you have no fund. For Parental Leave Pay on a child born or adopted from 1 July 2025, the ATO pays a super contribution to your fund after the end of the financial year.
Together, we’ll work through:
Do you have a plan for your income if illness or injury kept you out of the room for a while?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, giving the household support while you’re off work.
We’ll compare income protection, life and TPD cover with you for hands-on work with young children.
Many income protection policies base the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury, so part-time hours or time on leave in that year can matter. Insurance through super generally doesn’t start automatically for a new member under 25 or with a balance under $6,000, unless you ask the fund for it. Workers compensation is separate, through a state, territory or Commonwealth scheme.
Together, we’ll work through:
How could planning the tax side help more of what you earn go towards your own goals?
Weighing tax with your super and savings can show which choices suit your pay and your plans.
Together, we’ll plan tax around your pay, any packaging and your super, with an accountant advising on the detail.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. Salary packaging depends on what your employer offers, and some not-for-profit and charity employers have concessions that for-profit services generally don’t. A reportable fringe benefits amount on your income statement can count in the income tests for HELP repayments and Child Care Subsidy.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could a first home fit pay that can change with your level, your hours or your service?
Testing repayments on the pay you can count on can show what a home loan might look like for you.
We can look at how a first home or investment property fits pay that can change with your service.
A lender decides how it treats part-time, casual and family day care income, and a broker arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:
After years on the floor with children, how would you like the later part of your career to look?
Planning early can help you weigh fewer days, a new role or retiring, at a time that suits you.
We can work through how leadership, fewer days or a role off the floor in later years fits your retirement plans.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. Part-time years, time on leave and any move into a role with less lifting can each shape what your super needs to do later.
Together, we’ll work through:

Family Day Care From Home
Super, money for tax and personal cover organised with you for running care from home.

Early childhood work often starts before sunrise and runs until the last family comes through the door at close. Your days are spent with small children and the families who trust you with them each morning, so thinking about your own money can wait until the evening. We’ll take the time to listen to how your weeks run and what you’d like your money to do for you, then shape the advice with you, one step at a time.
A career in early childhood can grow in stages: a new qualification, a room of your own to lead, perhaps a service to run one day. Along the way there may be study, time with a family of your own or a move to a new service. Where other people share your plans or rely on you, we’ll plan with them in mind. At a pace that suits you, we can help you plan for the life you’d like, now and in the years to come.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
It depends on the award or agreement at the new service. Educators and qualified early childhood teachers are generally covered by different awards, and some services pay under an enterprise agreement instead.
Some services also pay above the award through the worker retention payment, a government program paid only where the service takes part. Preschools and kindergartens aren’t eligible for it, so a move from a long day care centre that takes part to a kindergarten can change your pay.
The new service’s payroll team or Fair Work can confirm the rate and classification for the role. We can compare an offer with you on pay, leave and super, and build the move into your budget.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It depends on your provider. Providers can choose to offer a workforce discount to early childhood teachers, educators, qualified directors and coordinators, and cooks, where the employee works at a centre-based day care or outside school hours care service and has a child enrolled at a service where they work or that the provider owns. The discount doesn’t reduce your Child Care Subsidy, and a minimum gap fee still applies. The guidance is being updated, so your provider can confirm what it offers.
Family day care educators can’t receive Child Care Subsidy when caring for their own child.
Any tax question on a discount is one for an accountant. We can work the gap fee into your budget and your plans for returning to work.
Start with the dates and length of each practicum block, then work out what the unpaid time would take out of your budget. Practicums are mandatory for most early childhood qualifications. A government subsidy has helped some providers give staff paid leave for practicums, so whether you’re paid depends on your provider and the funding available.
If you’re studying an eligible teaching degree, the means-tested Commonwealth Prac Payment can help during placements, and your higher education provider can confirm whether your course qualifies.
We can plan savings with you ahead of each block, along with course fees and any HELP debt.
An online HELP repayment calculator is a quick way to estimate what you’d repay at a given income, and it’s worth using.
Advice can add the rest of the picture: how study, a new level, time on leave and any salary sacrifice change your income, and how repayments sit alongside your budget, super and goals.
Compulsory repayments apply in any year your repayment income is above the minimum repayment threshold. The ATO treats salary sacrifice into super as a reportable employer super contribution, and adds it back into the repayment income it uses to work out compulsory HELP repayments. We can work through your repayments with you alongside the rest of your plans.
Points to work through before you go:
Services Australia confirms eligibility for Parental Leave Pay. We can build the plan with you before your leave starts.
It can, if your employer offers packaging. Some not-for-profit and charity employers can offer packaging with fringe benefits tax concessions, while for-profit services generally can’t.
Where packaged benefits create a reportable fringe benefits amount on your income statement, the ATO counts it in the income used for compulsory HELP repayments, and Services Australia counts it when working out Child Care Subsidy and Parental Leave Pay. So packaging can lower your tax and still raise the income those tests use.
An accountant can confirm the tax side, and Services Australia your payments. We can weigh packaging with you against your HELP, care and leave plans.
Yes. If you’re starting a Cert III, in your first year as a teacher or running a service, the initial conversation is a good place to begin.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring recent payslips, your agreement or letter of offer, your latest super statement, the details of any cover you hold and any HELP statement. We can talk face to face or over video.
