Pay that can vary, any on-call nights and recalls, physical work moving patients and equipment, your super and any cover all connect. We can help you bring them together, whether you stay on the wards or move into theatre.

What we advise on
How would part of your income continue if illness or injury kept you from the lifting and moving the job involves?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, so everyday costs can still be met.
We can weigh income protection, TPD and life cover with you for physical hospital work moving patients, beds and equipment.
Safe Work Australia says health care and social assistance has for a number of years been among the industries with the highest number of serious claims. Workers compensation is separate, through a state, territory or Commonwealth scheme. Income protection can replace part of your income if illness or injury stops you working, in or out of work, after a waiting period and subject to the policy’s terms.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could any on-call or recall pay help you build over a year?
Giving that pay a goal of its own, apart from the everyday budget, can help each extra payment count towards your plan.
We can set a budget with you on base pay and any penalties, and give any on-call and recall pay a goal.
Rostered weekend and shift work can attract penalty rates, and an award, if one covers you, can pay an on-call allowance for each period you’re on call and a minimum payment when you’re recalled. Those amounts can vary from one pay to the next, so we plan your fixed costs on the steadier part of your pay.
Together, we’ll work through:
Over the years you spend in hospital work, how could your super grow alongside your career?
Checking what earns super, and adding some of your own if you choose, can help those years count for more later.
Together, we’ll read your payslips and fund statements to see which pay earns super, and plan any top-ups.
Compulsory employer super is worked out on qualifying earnings, which include pay for ordinary hours and shift penalties. The ATO lists an on-call allowance for hours outside ordinary hours, and a call back allowance, as payments that aren’t qualifying earnings. Extra contributions are your choice, within caps that are indexed and can change each year.
Together, we’ll work through:
If you move into theatre or anaesthetics, what would you like that step to help you build?
Planning the study, the pay change and your goals together can help a new role move you towards what matters.
We can build a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, around where you’d like your hospital career to go.
A move into theatre can start with a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance with the operating theatre technician specialisation. The Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology and Practice asks for at least 360 hours of work in a clinical workplace, and its volume of learning is typically one to two years. We plan the study costs, any change in pay and where any extra pay from a new role goes.
Together, we’ll work through:
Once you’re ready to step back from hospital work, how would you like to spend your days?
Modelling your super and savings at a few finish dates can help you choose when to stop and what comes next.
We’ll go through with you how fewer shifts, lighter duties and your super could shape when you stop work.
Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over. If you’re eligible, a transition to retirement income stream can let you draw some super while you keep working reduced hours. We model the timing with you, including any years with fewer shifts.
Together, we’ll work through:
How could tax planning help more of your hospital pay go towards your goals?
Seeing how packaging and super fit your pay can help you keep more of it for the things you value.
We can plan how any salary packaging, super and investing affect your tax, alongside an accountant who lodges your return.
Public and not-for-profit hospitals can offer packaging under a capped fringe benefits tax exemption, and a for-profit private hospital doesn’t have that exemption. Moneysmart says packaging is usually more effective for people on middle to high incomes, as their marginal tax rate is higher, and it has to be arranged before you’re paid. An accountant advises on the tax detail.
Together, we’ll work through:
Where could a home of your own fit with the hours a hospital keeps?
Testing repayments against your steadier pay can show what a purchase could look like, and when.
Together, we’ll see how a home or investment property fits your budget, super and cover, with a broker comparing loans.
Lenders decide how much of any penalty, on-call or recall pay they count, and a broker can compare how different lenders treat it. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall.
Together, we’ll work through:
A Budget on Your Steadier Pay
Fixed costs planned on the steadier part of your pay, with room for quieter pay periods.
On-Call Pay With a Purpose
Any on-call allowance and recall pay given a goal of its own, chosen by you.
Super Checked Against On-Call Work
Your contributions read against your payslips, with any top-ups planned within the caps.
Cover for Lifting Work
Income protection and TPD weighed for physical work, subject to the insurer’s assessment and policy terms.
Cover Beyond Work Injuries
Sick leave and any personal cover planned for an illness, or an injury away from work.
A Step Into Theatre or Anaesthetics
Study costs, any trainee pay and a new classification planned before you start.
Packaging Weighed for Your Hospital
Packaging compared for your hospital type and tax rate, with an accountant on the tax.
A Later-Career Step Back
Fewer shifts or lighter duties planned around your super and the life you’d like.

A hospital relies on the people who move patients between wards, bring equipment where it’s needed and have a theatre ready before the first case of the day. It’s skilled, steady work, and it often carries on through nights, weekends and public holidays. We’ll take the time to understand how your weeks look and what matters to you away from the hospital, then help you build a plan around the way you’re paid and the life you’d like to live.
Your career can stay on the wards for many years, or move into theatre and, with study, into anaesthetics. Each is a good path, and each can change your hours, your pay and what you plan for. We’ll help you set goals that matter to you, such as a home of your own, more time for the things you enjoy or an easier pace one day. Then we can review the plan with you as your work changes, from one role to the next.

Your

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
Generally not, outside your ordinary hours. The ATO lists an on-call allowance for hours outside your ordinary hours of work, and a call back allowance, as payments that aren’t qualifying earnings, so compulsory employer super isn’t worked out on them. An hourly on-call allowance for ordinary hours does count, as do shift penalties.
Your award, agreement or contract may require more, and your payslips and fund statements together show what has been paid.
We can help you check your contributions against your pay, and plan any extra contributions of your own within the caps, which are indexed and can change each year.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
It depends on the cover in place.
We can review how your cover fits together, and the insurer makes the final decision on any claim. Free, confidential support is available from Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 and Lifeline on 13 11 14.
A move up can change your study costs, your pay while you train and your pay once your classification changes. The Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology and Practice includes set hours of work in a clinical workplace, and its volume of learning is typically one to two years, which is worth planning around your working hours.
Points worth planning before you start:
We can plan the money around the move with you, and the choice of course and role stays yours.
Not always. Tax law gives public hospitals and not-for-profit hospitals a capped fringe benefits tax exemption, and a for-profit private hospital doesn’t have that exemption. A not-for-profit private hospital is in that group, so the hospital’s type matters more than whether it’s public or private.
Moneysmart says packaging is usually more effective for people on middle to high incomes, as their marginal tax rate is higher, and it has to be arranged before you’re paid.
If you’re moving between hospitals, it’s worth asking the new employer what it offers. We can compare take-home pay, super and cover between the two roles, with an accountant confirming the tax.
A pay guide or pay calculator can give you a useful estimate of what a role or a roster may pay, based on the figures and assumptions it uses.
Advice starts from your own payslips and goals. It looks at how your pay, including any penalties and on-call or recall pay, fits your budget, which of it earns super, whether any packaging suits you and what cover suits physical work.
A pay guide can be a helpful first look. From there, we can help you plan what each part of your pay goes towards, alongside an accountant on the tax.
Start with the steadier part of your pay. Base pay, plus any penalties you reliably earn, can cover fixed costs such as rent or repayments, bills and groceries. Any on-call allowance and recall pay can then go to a separate account with a goal of its own, such as a buffer, a deposit or extra super.
If an award covers you, being on call can bring an allowance for each on-call period, and a recall can bring a minimum payment, so a busy month and a quiet one can look quite different. Your payslips over a few months show the range.
We can set up the budget with you and review it when your hours or any on-call pattern change.
Yes. From a first hospital job to years on the wards or in theatre, we start with where things are now.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring payslips from a few different pay periods, including an on-call week if you have one, any agreement or contract letter, your latest super statement and details of any cover you hold.
