Wages or day rates, storm work, a truck and chipper and duties that change over a career all connect. We can help you work through each of them, from your first day on a crew to consulting.

What we advise on
What could keep money coming in at home if illness or injury meant time away from tree work?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, subject to the policy’s terms and the insurer’s assessment.
Together, we’ll compare life, TPD and income protection cover from the insurers willing to consider your work.
Income protection usually pays a share of your pre-tax income, and Moneysmart says most policies have a waiting period between 14 days and two years. When you apply, insurers usually ask about your age and job, so what you do on a tree job is part of the picture. The insurer decides on any application and any claim.
Together, we’ll work through:

How far could a strong run of tree work go towards the life you’d like?
Deciding before the money lands can put it towards bills, repayments, savings and goals of your own.
We can map your tree work income with you into one budget built on what you can rely on.
Pay in tree work can come as wages, a day rate, a job price or a mix. Repayments and household bills still arrive every month, so we start with the income you can rely on and plan anything above it. If you employ a crew, from 1 July 2026 their super must generally reach their fund within 7 business days after payday.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could a share of your good months build your super for the years ahead?
Contributions planned around how you’re paid can add up over a working life.
We can work through who pays your super on wages, on a day rate and in your own business.
On a contract, a business may still have to pay super if you’re paid mainly for your labour. The ATO looks at whether more than half the contract’s value is for your labour, whether payment depends on a set result and whether you can delegate, and an ABN doesn’t settle it. A contract with your own company, trust or partnership is different, as the hirer doesn’t have to pay. An accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand.
Together, we’ll work through:
Which decisions in a big year of tree work are worth planning with tax in mind?
Setting tax money aside and timing big decisions with an accountant can leave fewer surprises when the bill arrives.
We can set out the tax side of your tree work with you, alongside an accountant.
Ryker’s financial advisers plan tax and set tax structure and strategy, working alongside your accountant, who prepares and lodges your return. Part of each big invoice may end up owed as tax, so an accountant can estimate the amount to set aside. What you can claim for saws, ropes and a work vehicle is also a question for an accountant.
Together, we’ll work through:
From trainee to your own crew or consulting, what’s the next step you’d like to plan?
Planning a step ahead can show you what it costs, what it pays and what changes at home.
Together, we’ll plan your next step in tree work and set it out in a financial plan, or Statement of Advice.
Tree work can change over a working life, from trainee to qualified climber, from wages to a day rate, or from climbing to consulting. Some councils ask for a diploma in arboriculture, or an equivalent, before they accept a tree report from a consulting arborist. Each council sets its own requirements, and we plan the money side with you.
Together, we’ll work through:
Once you’re ready to ease out of tree work, what would you like your days to look like?
An early plan can give you more choices about when you finish and how you spend those years.
We’ll look at retirement with you from super and savings first, with any gear or business value kept as an addition.
Super and savings can form the base of your retirement income, because what a truck, chipper or tree business could fetch isn’t certain. Preservation age is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964, and super can generally only be accessed once you meet a condition of release, such as ceasing employment at 60 or over.
Together, we’ll work through:
Is a home or investment property part of your plans, on pay that can change from month to month?
Testing repayments against your slowest stretch can show what a purchase might ask of your budget.
We’ll work out with you how a purchase fits your slowest stretch of work, and a broker arranges any loan.
A lender decides how it reads day rates and ABN income, and a broker compares lenders and arranges any loan. Borrowing to invest can magnify losses as well as gains, and the loan must still be repaid if values fall. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, though property held on 12 May 2026 is exempt.
Together, we’ll work through:

Read moreTree work is a skill few people have, and it takes real care and a good eye. The trees you look after shape streets, parks and backyards, and many will be standing long after the job is done. Our first step is getting to know you: how you work, what matters to you and the people around you. From there, we’ll help you build a plan around the way you’re paid and the life you’d like.
Good runs of work can go further than this month’s bills. They can put something towards a home, time away with the people you love, a truck or a crew of your own, or more freedom later on. Anyone who relies on your income can be part of the plan as well. Whatever you’re working towards, we can review the plan with you each year, so it keeps up with the goals you’ve set.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
They may. The ATO treats a contractor as an employee for super if more than half the contract’s value is for their labour, they’re not paid to achieve a set result and they can’t delegate the work. Having an ABN doesn’t settle it, but a contract with your own company, trust or partnership means the hirer doesn’t have to pay.
Saws, a chipper or other gear in your price can change the sum, as payments for equipment aren’t labour. An accountant or the ATO can confirm where you stand. Either way, we can plan your super with you around what’s being paid and what’s yours to add.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
Your employer’s industry, where the work is done and your duties and qualifications decide it, rather than your job title. Fair Work sets out several routes:
Two people on one tree job can be on different awards, for example if they work for different employers, and Fair Work is the place to check yours. We can plan with you from the pay you get, so your budget and super start from your own figures.
It helps to decide before the invoices go out. A plan for storm money can include:
How much goes where is your decision. We can work through it with you, so the money has a purpose before it lands.
Start with the repayments, set against the income you can rely on rather than your strongest month. Then add what it costs to run: fuel, servicing, registration and any business insurance from a general insurance broker. A broker can compare lenders and arrange any finance.
A loan also changes what anyone relying on you would be left with if you passed away or couldn’t work again, so life and TPD amounts are worth weighing against the debt. We can work through the budget and cover with you before you sign, and the insurer decides on any application.
It can come from more than one place, depending on how you’re paid and what you hold:
We can plan with you how these fit together, and the scheme or insurer decides any claim.
Public liability, tools, machines and vehicle cover are a general insurance broker’s work, including explaining what each policy covers.
A financial adviser looks at the personal side: income protection, life and TPD cover for you and the people who rely on you, along with super, savings and how the business pays you. We can go through options from the insurers willing to consider your work, beside any business cover you hold, and the insurer decides on any application.
Some councils ask for a diploma in arboriculture, or an equivalent, before they’ll accept a tree report, so it’s worth checking what the councils you’d work with require. Points to plan:
We can cost the move with you while your income from climbing is still coming in.
Yes. We can look with you at how long you’d like to keep climbing, and any move into consulting or supervising along the way. If you’re on an ABN, what goes into your super may be yours to plan, unless a business has to pay it.
We’d build the plan on super and savings, with gear or a tree business sale as an addition, as a sale isn’t certain. You can read more about our retirement advice.
We’re a national service, so you can meet with us by phone or video from anywhere in Australia. We also have offices in three cities:
Yes. A trainee on the chipper, a contract climber or the owner of a tree business can all start with us, from wherever things are now.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring your latest payslips or tax returns, a statement from your super fund, any insurance policies you have and details of any gear loans. We can meet in person or online.
