Any HELP debt, salary packaging, overtime, training costs and a first home all connect, often before you know where you’ll train next. We help you put them in order with one plan that can move with each rotation.

What we advise on
When a rotation moves you to a new hospital or city, how could your plan adjust with it?
Each rotation is a natural point to review your plan, so your budget, savings and goals can suit the new location.
Together, we’ll set out a financial plan, or Statement of Advice, from internship to fellowship, built to move when your location does.
Interns, residents and registrars can face a new hospital, a rural term or a training program in another city, and a Bonded Medical Program return of service if it applies to you. Each move can change where you live, what you spend and when buying a home suits you. We can review the plan with you at each of those points and adjust it for the move ahead.
Together, we’ll work through:
As hospital pay climbs, how much of it is reaching your goals after tax?
Tax planned alongside your training years can let a bigger share of rising hospital pay go to the goals you’re saving for.
We’ll set out with you how packaging, salary sacrifice and overtime each feed into any HELP repayments, alongside your accountant.
The ATO works out compulsory HELP repayments on repayment income, not on taxable income alone. Any reportable fringe benefits amount from packaging and any reportable super contributions, including salary sacrifice, are added back, and from the 2025-26 income year repayments are calculated at marginal rates on income above a minimum. Your accountant advises on the tax detail, and we plan around it with you.
Together, we’ll work through:
With training moving you between hospitals, when and where could buying a home make sense?
Weighing buying against renting at each stage of training can show when, and where, owning a home could suit you.
We can weigh up with you whether to buy now, rent near the hospital or wait until your training location settles.
Lenders decide how they treat overtime and a HELP debt, and whether any offer for medical professionals applies. A broker arranges any loan. From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on residential property is limited to new builds, with property held on 12 May 2026 exempt from that change. For gains accruing after 1 July 2027, indexation and a 30% minimum tax replace the 50% CGT discount, and an accountant can confirm what applies to you.
Together, we’ll work through:
What could support your living costs if illness or injury paused your hospital work?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, so savings aren’t the only source for living costs.
We can look at how income protection treats training years, when hours and earnings can change from one year to the next.
Moneysmart explains that income protection usually replaces a percentage of your pre-tax income and bases the benefit on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury. A year with heavy overtime and a year of research or part-time training can look quite different at claim time. The insurer decides the terms of any cover and makes the final decision on any claim.
Together, we’ll work through:
With overtime paid at different times, what could each payment go towards?
Knowing which bills regular pay covers can mean each overtime payment, whenever it’s paid, goes towards something you’ve chosen.
We’ll map a household budget with you that runs on your regular pay, with any overtime counted once it’s claimed and paid.
Unrostered overtime is generally paid once you claim it through your hospital’s process, under the award or agreement that covers you. Exam fees, a bond on a rural rental and a move between hospitals can land in the same month. We can plan a buffer with you for those months and for any tax-time bill.
Together, we’ll work through:
Could the years you spend in training also be building your super?
Looking over your fund, its fees and your contributions while you train can help these early years add steadily to your super.
We can plan your super with you from internship, with any salary sacrifice weighed against HELP and a home deposit.
A stapled super fund is your existing account that generally follows you between employers, unless you choose another fund. That makes the first choice worth checking, along with any default cover it carries and what the premiums cost. Extra contributions are optional, and they count towards contribution caps that are set for each year and indexed.
Together, we’ll work through:
Is retirement too far away to think about while you’re still in training?
Even small contributions made during training can have decades to grow into a larger super balance at retirement.
We’ll go through what contributions made during training years may mean for super at retirement, decades from now.
Super is generally preserved until you reach preservation age, which is 60 for anyone born on or after 1 July 1964, and meet a condition of release such as retiring. Money for a deposit, study or a research year needs to sit outside super, apart from any First Home Super Saver amounts if you’re eligible. We model the long view with you on stated assumptions, never a promised return.
Together, we’ll work through:

The Step to Consultant in View
Super, cover and savings prepared before fellowship and a first consultant role.

Medicine asks for years of study before the first full pay arrives. Then the salary often comes while much else is still open: the next rotation, the training program and the city you’ll live in. We start by listening to what you’d like your work and your money to make possible, now and later. Then we help you build a plan for your pay, your savings and your cover that can change as your career takes shape.
Life outside the hospital matters too. If there’s a partner whose work moves with yours, family you’d like to live near or a place you hope to settle one day, we’ll plan with them in mind as well. Whether the next few years bring a rural term, a new city, fellowship or a home of your own, we can help you plan for a life that feels like yours, at every stage of training and beyond.

Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
Salary sacrifice lowers your taxable income, but it doesn’t lower the income used for HELP. The ATO treats salary sacrifice into super as a reportable employer super contribution, and adds it back into the repayment income it uses to work out compulsory HELP repayments. Any reportable fringe benefits amount from salary packaging is added back in the same way.
Salary sacrifice may still suit your plans for other reasons, such as building your super, and your accountant can confirm the tax effect. We can set out the trade-offs with you across super, HELP, take-home pay and any deposit you’re saving for.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.

What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
There’s no single answer, and it depends on your plans. Points worth weighing:
We can weigh these with you against when you’d like to buy and where you expect to be living.
Overtime is part of your taxable income, so it adds to the repayment income used for HELP. From the 2025-26 income year, compulsory repayments are worked out at marginal rates on income above a minimum, so extra income can lift the repayment.
The Medicare levy surcharge has its own income test, which counts reportable fringe benefits and reportable super contributions. It applies above set thresholds if you don’t hold an appropriate level of private hospital cover, and a year with more overtime can move you into a higher tier.
Your accountant can work out the figures for your return. We can plan the cashflow around them with you.
It depends on the fee and your circumstances. The ATO says self-education expenses can be deductible when they relate directly to your current employment as a doctor and maintain or improve the skills you need for your current duties, or are likely to increase your income from that employment.
The ATO also says you can claim the cost of renewing your practising certificate where you need it for your current work, but not the initial cost of getting it, and that relocating to a new work location isn’t deductible. Your accountant can confirm what applies to each fee.
We can build these costs into your budget with you, whatever the tax treatment turns out to be.
A mortgage broker can compare loans, explain how lenders may treat overtime, a HELP debt or any offers for medical professionals, and arrange the loan itself.
Advice looks at what sits around the loan: how a deposit is saved alongside any HELP debt, what a purchase means for your super, cover and cashflow, and how the timing fits your training plans. We don’t arrange or recommend loans.
Talking to both can be useful. We can plan the purchase with you and work alongside a broker you choose.
If you have a return of service obligation under the Bonded Medical Program, it involves working in eligible regional, rural or remote areas, and where and when you complete it can shape a purchase. Points to consider:
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing can confirm the terms of your obligation. We can build its timing into your plan with you.
Income protection usually pays a percentage of your pre-tax income, with the benefit based on your earnings in the 12 months before an illness or injury. A year with heavy overtime and a year of research, part-time training or leave can lead to different benefit amounts. Each policy sets out how it defines income, including whether overtime counts.
Any cover through your super fund may use different definitions and waiting periods from cover held outside super. We can compare the terms with you before you rely on any of them, and the insurer makes the final decision on any claim.
Yes, whether you’re an intern with a first payslip or a registrar thinking about a first home.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first.
It helps to bring a recent payslip showing any overtime, your HELP balance from myGov if you have one, a super statement and your rotation or training dates, if you know them. We can meet in person or online.
