Your driving and the work around it, how you’re employed or contracted, and any cover through work and super all shape your cover. We can help you compare cover, check what you hold and lodge a claim with you.

What we advise on
Between runs and rest days, what would replace your driving pay if an illness or injury kept you out of the cab?
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, so bills can still be met while you recover.
We’ll compare income protection with you around how your driving is paid and how your weeks on the road run.
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working, usually based on your earnings in the 12 months before the illness or injury. Waiting periods can run from 14 days to two years, and you must still be unable to work, as the policy defines it, at the end of the waiting period. Benefits can be paid for a set number of years or to an age.
What we work through with you on income protection:
If anyone at home relies on the money your driving brings in, what would you want in place for them?
Lump sum life cover can go to your beneficiaries for any loans, household bills and the goals you’re working towards.
We’ll size life cover with you from the debts, bills and any truck finance your household carries.
Life cover can pay a lump sum to your beneficiaries if you pass away, and some policies also pay on a terminal illness diagnosis. Insurers usually ask about your age and job when you apply. Where life and TPD cover are packaged together, a TPD payout may reduce the life cover, and where no beneficiary is named, your estate or the super trustee may decide where the money goes.
What we work through for life cover:
Once driving and every other kind of work were behind you for good, how would the years ahead be funded?
TPD cover can pay a lump sum, as each policy defines total and permanent disability, towards debts and future costs.
Together, we’ll read each TPD definition against a working life built on driving and the other work your experience could suit.
TPD cover can pay a lump sum if illness or injury leaves you unlikely to work again, as the policy defines it. An own occupation definition looks at your usual job, while an any occupation definition looks at any job suited to your education, training or experience. Own occupation cover is usually only available outside super, and whether it’s offered can depend on the insurer and your occupation.
What we compare with you for TPD:
After a major illness is diagnosed, what would help with treatment costs and the time you spend off the road?
A trauma policy can pay a lump sum when a listed condition meets the policy’s definition and isn’t excluded.
We can read what a trauma policy lists with you, and how a lump sum would sit beside income protection.
A trauma policy can pay a lump sum for the critical illnesses or serious injuries it lists, when one meets its definition and isn’t excluded. Medical definitions can be different between insurers, and trauma insurance doesn’t cover mental health conditions. New trauma cover can’t be held inside super, which has been the rule for policies written since 1 July 2014.
What we read with you in a trauma policy:
Has the cover inside any super fund kept pace with the driving work you do today?
Checking each fund’s insurance together can show what you hold and what still suits your work.
We’ll start with the cover in each fund, then set out any change in a financial plan, or Statement of Advice.
Most super funds give eligible members life and TPD cover automatically, and some also give income protection, for a set amount. Default cover inside super can usually be issued without medical checks, though it may carry pre-existing condition rules set out in the fund’s PDS, and increasing it is usually underwritten like any other application. If a fund has classified your job incorrectly, Moneysmart suggests contacting the fund.
What we look at in your super with you:
From a sick day to a long recovery, how could savings and cover work together for each stretch away from the wheel?
Matching leave, savings and cover to short and longer spells off the road can give each one a plan.
We can look at your leave, savings and cover with you against short spells, longer ones and a permanent change.
From 1 August 2026, where the Heavy Vehicle National Law applies, a driver must not drive a heavy vehicle while unfit to do so. The national regulator’s guidance says that can include a temporary illness or injury. Income protection can pay only after its waiting period, on the policy’s definition of disability, so a short spell may end before any payment starts. Your doctor advises on fitness to drive, and the insurer decides on cover.
What we plan with you for time off the road:
Working for yourself, what would keep part of your income coming in, and the business’s fixed costs met, if you couldn’t drive?
Personal income and business costs can be looked at as two separate pieces of cover, each with its own terms.
Together, we’ll set out personal cover and business costs as separate pieces, before or soon after you start on your own.
Hirers don’t generally cover contractors for paid sick leave or workers compensation. A business may still have to pay your super if the contract is mainly for your labour, paid for your personal labour and skills rather than for a result, and can’t be delegated, but not when it contracts with your company, trust or partnership. Business expenses cover is separate from income protection and can pay eligible fixed costs as the policy defines them.
What we set out with you when you work for yourself:
Should you ever need to claim, who could sit beside you with the forms and the follow-up?
Having help with the paperwork and the follow-up can leave you more time for your recovery and the people close to you.
We’ll lodge any claim with you, then keep in touch with the insurer or fund while it assesses the claim.
Moneysmart suggests speaking first to whoever you arranged the cover through, and to your employer for cover through an employment arrangement. An insurer can ask for medical reports, details of your work duties, including physical requirements, and the number of hours you work each week, along with payslips and tax returns, or financial statements if you’re self-employed. The insurer assesses the claim, and a complaint goes first to the insurer or super fund, then to AFCA if it isn’t resolved.
How we help with a claim:
Your work and your cover
This list isn’t complete, and nothing on it decides anything on its own. We start by learning about your situation, and any decision on cover is the insurer’s.

Claim Paperwork Lodged With You

Good advice starts with how your working week actually runs. We begin by listening to the runs you do, the hours you keep, how you’re paid and what you’d want your cover to do for you and anyone at home. Then we explain each option in plain words, take your questions as they come and work at a pace that fits around your time on the road. Our recommendations usually come to you in writing, and every decision stays yours.
Between conversations, we take on the legwork. With your consent, we can request details from any fund or insurer that holds cover for you, gather the payslips or business accounts an application needs and follow up anything outstanding. You can bring a partner or family member to any meeting. If you ever need to claim, we’ll lodge it with you and keep you posted until the insurer reaches its decision.
Every financial decision impacts the next
Great advice starts with understanding the bigger picture. Every stage of life presents new opportunities and challenges, from buying property and changing careers to growing your family, planning for retirement and protecting what matters most. At Ryker, we help connect every piece of your financial world into one clear strategy.
Your
Wealth

Ryker’s financial advisers are licensed to give personal advice under Synchron Advice’s Australian financial services licence (AFSL 243313). We start with you: your driving work, your family, work, income, assets and goals. Then we recommend the types and amounts of cover that suit your life.
Driving for a living can mean long or irregular hours, nights away, loading and securing freight as well as driving, and work as an employee, an owner-driver or through an app. Each can affect how an insurer assesses an application and how a policy pays, so we look at the whole job, not only the time behind the wheel.
With a financial adviser, you also have:
Going directly to an insurer can mean no separate advice fee, but you’ll only see that insurer’s policies, and you’ll generally receive general advice only, which doesn’t consider your personal circumstances.
Going through an online comparison site or broker, you may see more options side by side, but they also generally provide general advice only, which doesn’t consider your whole financial picture.
When we give you personal advice, the law requires us to act in your best interests, which we take personally. The insurer still decides whether to offer cover and on what terms.
We’re invested in your long-term success. What we do is personal, and we take it personally.
Your financial decisions connect, so we consider the parts of your financial life that are relevant to the advice you need:
This is how we help you make decisions today with your longer-term goals in view.
Everybody’s situation is different, so we listen first, understand what matters to you and explain your options clearly before we make a recommendation.
From 1 August 2026, where the Heavy Vehicle National Law applies, a driver must not drive a heavy vehicle while unfit to do so. A short illness or injury can mean a few days or weeks out of the cab.
Income protection can pay part of your income after a waiting period, if you’re still unable to work as the policy defines it when that period ends. Waiting periods can run from 14 days to two years, and you choose one when you apply, so a short spell may be over before any payment would start. Any paid leave or savings can carry those first weeks, and we can weigh a waiting period against them.
That comes down to how the policy defines total and permanent disability. An own occupation definition looks at whether you can do your usual job. Own occupation cover is usually only available outside super, and whether it’s offered can depend on the insurer and your occupation. An any occupation definition looks at any job suited to your education, training or experience, which for a driver may take in any dispatch, allocation or training work you’ve done.
The insurer assesses each claim against its own definition. We can compare the TPD definitions in each super fund and any policy outside super with you, and set out how each one is worded for someone whose experience reaches beyond driving.
Describe the whole job as it is: your runs and hours, any nights away, the loads you carry, and any loading, unloading, securing or climbing on the truck or trailer. Since 5 October 2021, the duty when applying for consumer life cover is to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation, which means answering the questions asked with reasonable care.
If you leave out important details, the insurer may change or cancel your cover or refuse a claim (Moneysmart). We can go through each question with you before you answer, and the insurer decides whether to offer cover and on what terms.
They’re separate pieces. Income protection can pay part of your personal income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working. Business expenses cover is a separate cover that can pay eligible fixed costs of the business, as the policy defines them.
Hirers don’t generally cover contractors for paid sick leave or workers compensation, so both pieces are worth planning early. At claim time, an insurer can ask for financial statements if you’re self-employed. Cover for the truck itself, its load and public liability is general insurance, which a general insurance broker can advise on. We can compare income protection and business expenses cover with you.
If the platform you deliver through arranges any cover for you, the platform or its insurer can explain what that cover includes.
Income protection is separate personal cover. It can pay part of your income after a waiting period if illness or injury stops you working, subject to the policy’s terms. Insurers usually ask about your job, so your delivery work, the vehicle you use, your weekly hours and any other work you do are part of an application. We can compare income protection with you, and the insurer decides whether to offer cover and on what terms.
A quick online quote is built from a fixed set of questions, and comparison sites and direct insurers generally provide general advice only, which doesn’t consider your personal circumstances. Those questions may not reach a per-kilometre rate with allowances rolled in, nights away on linehaul, the loading and climbing around the driving, or the gap between an owner-driver’s personal income and the business’s running costs.
Personal advice looks at all of that, along with any cover through an employer or super, and compares policies from a wide range of insurers. The insurer decides whether to offer cover and on what terms.
Your accountant and financial adviser bring different expertise to the same decisions. Your accountant can advise on tax reporting, structures and consequences; we help you plan how cashflow, debt, super, investments and protection work towards your goals. We can coordinate before important decisions.
What an accountant does
What a financial adviser does
Professional roles and authorisations matter. We provide financial advice within our authorisations and work with your accountant for specialist tax advice and lodgements.
Where they work together
Yes. Whether you do local runs or linehaul, drive your own truck or deliver through an app, we begin with how you drive and get paid, any cover you already have and what matters most to you.
There’s no cost for the initial conversation. Any advice after that is a paid service, with its scope and fee agreed with you in writing first. A recent payslip or your contract, business accounts or a tax return if you work for yourself, each fund statement and any employer or policy documents are useful to have on hand, and together we’ll agree on a practical next step.
